Praised by The American Organist for his “effortless technique and sensitive musicality,” organist Tim Pyper has won First Prize in many prestigious North American competitions. These include the Arthur Poister Memorial Competition (2008), the John Rodland Memorial Competition (2002), the A.G.O./Quimby Region II Competition (2001) and the Royal Canadian College of Organists’ National Competition (2001).
Tim was a featured performer at the 2002 R.C.C.O National Convention and the same year played at the A.G.O. Philadelphia convention as part of the Rising Stars series. His solo recitals have been broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and by National Public Radio’s Pipedreams. Tim's church appointments have included tenures as Assistant Organist at St. James' Cathedral, Toronto, Organist of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rochester, and Organist & Choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension (Episcopal), Rochester. He holds the Associate diploma from the American Guild of Organists.
Currently, Tim is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Cornell University where he studies with Annette Richards and David Yearsley. His dissertation research focuses on performance practice of early 20th-century English organ music. Prior to enrolling at Cornell, Tim received his B.M., M.M. and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music as a student of David Higgs. Other significant organ teachers have included Giles Bryant, Jack Mitchener, John Tuttle and William Porter (improvisation). His piano training with Barbara Lister-Sink forms the basis of his technical approach to all keyboard instruments.
